Is Ford Finally Getting It? European-Style Cars Coming to US Market

by

I noticed on AutoblogGreen that Ford is thinking about releasing their uber-compact Ka here in the United States.

The Ka is new Ford model that is being produced in Poland for the European market, and by that I mean those tiny little cars that Europeans drive, as huge SUVs just don’t work a lot of European streets. Remember the Yugo? That was one of those attempts to bring in smaller, more gas efficient vehicles to the American market, which fell flat as we all know that us Americans love our big cars, no matter the MPGs.

Enter the rise of the gallon of gas and perhaps now is a good time to introduce again a small, gas-efficient European model, but one that is actually made by an American company, so all patriotic pro-Americans can feel good about driving a tiny little car.

Of course, the argument that many Americans raise about their need for a larger car, albeit minivan or SUV is usually along the lines of “kids” and “safety” and “comfort during the hour long commute I have to work every day.” You cannot change some peoples minds about that kind of stuff, unfortunately, especially as Americans and cars seem to be a cultural phenomenon. But instead of driving the SUV into the city for work or even to the convenience store a mile away, why not have a smaller car around the house to make these one-person trips?

And if you live in a city, well, heck, then why not have a tiny car that gets up to 60 MPG? Think of it, a small car is so much easier to park, and it doesn’t hog the roads so you have plenty of room for bike lanes.

Look how well the Cooper Mini and the Volkswagon Beetle does here. Why is Ford so slow in realizing that they can get a piece of the sub-compact market growing ever bigger here in the US? Also, WTF, Ford, you can build a 60 MPG car for Europe but not here in the US? And you wonder why you are losing money quarter after quarter…

All I need to know is if I can fit my golf clubs in it? If yes, I’m sold. Oh, wait, it’s still a Ford.
